Five Tips For Colored Pencils Shading. Shading with colored pencils is easy and fun. It can give depth to any design and expand the range of a small number of pencils to hundreds of variations. In this article we’ll look at five different tips or techniques that can give smooth, beautiful shading to any design. Prismacolor Colorless Blender pencil 1. Prismacolor Colorless Blender Marker or Bestine rubber cement thinner or Zippo lighter fluid or Turpenoid odorless mineral spirits. If you don’t have these colors, substitute five reds (including pinks), four greens (including yellow or nearly yellow green) and three values of gold to light gold or cream. Cream would have worked as well as jasmine. Or use shaded colors of other hues or values, make up your own color harmony! I chose predominantly red and green for a natural look but you could color this in any way you wanted! Hues can change along a value gradient too, you could use a blue- violet, purple, red- purple, magenta and pink range for a gorgeous effect. The rose design in the center is a traditional heraldic rose based on wild roses with only five petals rather than today’s multipetal varieties. If you have fewer colors, shading red, green, orange up through yellow works well and cold colors like violet, blue and magenta to white. A white pencil can be used instead of the Colorless Blender pencil but darks should be restated over it. Here’s five great tips for good shading! Pressure Shading. The simplest, most natural type of shading is to just alter pressure on your pencil. Sharpen it to a fine point and make small overlapping circular marks with as light a pressure as you can. Try to cover the area smoothly at the light end of the section and then gradually increase pressure as you work toward the darker end where it’s filled in nearly solid. Illustration 1: Pressure Shading. Alternately, you can shade the entire area smoothly in the lightest value, then add more layers as it gets darker and darker shrinking the area of the last layers. You can fade these smoothly into each other or leave a clear line between areas shaded once or more than once. Pressure shading is a good way to take a dark or medium value pencil and get more variations out of it. Pressure shading is a good way to take a dark or medium value pencil and get more variations out of it. The red in any 1. Practice extends the number of values you can achieve just by pressure changing. Here’s the petals on the Rose Mandala shaded in entirely with pressure changing: Illustration 2: Pressure Shading. Colorless Blend. Pressure shaded areas show flecks of white from the paper. One of the simplest ways to smooth them is burnishing with a colorless blender. Start at the lightest area and press hard while making slightly larger overlapping short or circular marks. Stay within value areas and work light to dark. This will darken and intensify the color, smooth out all the white specks and give a polished surface to the areas. Colorless Blender pencils burnish away white specks and blends layers of colors. Use over a color change to get a soft transition. Illustration 3: Colorless Blend. Add Darker Colors to Intensify Shading. Illustration 4: Deeper Color. The contrast diminished in the large petals once I applied the colorless blender, so I intensified the dark edge by adding Tuscan Red right over the burnished area. Colored pencils are translucent and Prismacolors blend easily with the layers under them. It didn’t get quite as dark as Tuscan Red does by itself but reached a nice dramatic dark anyway that lent the flower some depth. A lttle band of stronger Crimson overlapping that into the pinker area smoothed the transition. Layering darker colors over light or medium adds color and darkens. Layering light over dark burnishes and adds nuances without dramatic changes. Work back and forth with the medium and dark colors till the transition looks smooth. Either color can help where strokes went awry to create unwanted streaks, spots or patterns blending out the colors under them. Pressure is medium to heavy on these later layers since the paper tooth is filled and you’re smudging with each new stroke, blending new color with what’s under it. 4. Shade Light Colors over Dark to Blend. Illustration 5: Overlap Colors. Instead of shading entirely by pressure, I did some areas by setting out several values in the same color group. Best Toys for Children with Autism Countless toys can help develop social skills, a common area of challenge for children with autism. Choose activities that put an emphasis on give- and- take, which is important in reciprocal social interaction. Ball games are a great for practicing age- appropriate social skills, including following set rules and handling the unexpected. Daddy Day Camp is a cinematic achievement, worthy to be mentioned along side other great children’s films such as Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, The. We call it her asshole face. This is when my 7- year- old Norah tilts her head to the side, makes eye contact, and draws her lips to a straight line. Then she does whatever I just told her not to do. I tell her not to drink more water before bed, and she gives me the asshole face and proceeds to drink more water.
A few days ago, we were at my son’s basketball game. My wife told Norah not to go onto the other court with her friend, and Norah turned, gave her the asshole face, and kept walking. Every time she gives me the asshole face, I tell her to cut the crap. Don’t look at me like that,” I say. Who do you think you are, kid?” And sure enough, she does it anyway. Like all children, Norah is complicated. But she’s hands down the most stubborn of our three children. She enjoys getting her own way. And she pushes the limits for it. Before becoming a parent, I used to listen to my older sister complain about her daughter — how she never listened, always talked back, and thought she was the boss. Ginger jokes are very popular and well known to be very funny, today we've decided to bring you these collections of funniest ginger jokes. Enjoy.I told her that it just showed that her daughter was becoming a strong- willed woman and that was a good thing.“You make her out to be a jerk,” I would say. She’s going to grow up and become a CEO or a senator. I think that it’s awesome.” Melissa gave me a look that seemed to say “you have no idea what you are talking about.”Turns out, however, and unfortunately, I did know what I was talking about. According to a 2. American Psychological Association, stubborn children who defy authority are more likely to become academic overachievers and high- earning adults. I know. This is a tough pill to swallow. But here we are. The study looked at children between the ages of 8 and 1. These children were assessed for various personality traits such as academic conscientiousness, entitlement, and most importantly, defiance. Forty years later, the researchers checked back in on these children, now adults, to see how they had evolved. And like all things with parenting, it was a no- win situation. The rule- breaking and defiance of parental authority turned out to be the best predictor of earning high income as an adult. So what does this mean for me, the father of a delightfully stubborn girl? I suppose it means there is hope (I’m trying to be optimistic here). Like any parent, my overall goal is for my little girl to go grow up to be a successful and independent woman. According to this study, she is well on her way. Now, keep in mind that the study doesn’t state why there is such a correlation between stubbornness in children and later success. In a Time article reporting on the study, Donna Gorman explains that “the authors postulate that such children might be more competitive in the classroom, leading to better grades. They might be more demanding as adults; when locked in salary negotiations, they may be the ones who demand more. They may be more willing to fight for their own financial interests, even at the risk of annoying friends and colleagues.”The fact is, all of these qualities are wonderful in adults, but infuriating and annoying in children. So when you see some young child stomping their feet at Target and you think to yourself, “That kid needs to learn some respect,” what you actually need to do is not judge the parent because that’s a dick move. Instead, you need to say, “That kid is probably going to be someone’s boss.”I will admit, though, I do take comfort in this study. There are times I’ve stayed up late thinking about my little girl and wondering who she will become. I wonder if she will ever grow out of her asshole face. If she will ever stop talking back, stomping her foot, or slamming doors. However, I suppose I should be thinking instead about all the doors she will be stubborn enough to force open. In a world of inequality between men and women, where salaries are not equal and the glass ceiling for women is too visible, I can’t help but realize that if anyone can break down the status quo, it’s my hotheaded and flagrantly stubborn daughter. And when I think about it that way, I feel a little better about this whole parenting gig. The thing is, raising children is a huge gamble. Like most parents, I’m constantly wondering if I’m doing it wrong. I worry that I’m going to make some misstep as a parent, and bam, it will set off a chain reaction resulting in my child turning into some sort of a city- park flasher, or worse, a reality TV star. But studies like this bring me comfort. It helps me know that although she’s difficult for us to handle now, this all might be part of some grand plan that ignites her amazingly successful future. So, those of you with stubborn, iron- willed children, those with the foot- stomping, rule- bending, asshole- face- giving little kids, don’t fret too much. If this study is accurate, it’s only temporary. Eventually that stubborn child will make you so proud that all of those infuriating days will be worth it. Definition of the word "Joke": A joke is a humorous short story, quip or question. Robert Hetzron a well known linguist, offers this definition: "A joke is a short humorous piece of oral literature in which the funniness culminates in the final sentence, called the punchline… In fact, the main condition is that the tension should reach its highest level at the very end. No continuation relieving the tension should be added. As for its being "oral," it is true that jokes may appear printed, but when further transferred, there is no obligation to reproduce the text verbatim, as in the case of poetry." Budgets Are Sexy“It’s raining farts!”That’s what my four year old proudly exclaimed as he busted into our bedroom the other morning : ) Very typical of him, always trying to break the “no potty talk” rule since you obviously can’t enforce it when you’re laughing right alongside him (!!). Kids are experts at this. Pushing the limits of fun, and reminding us adults not to be so damn serious all the time. When did we have so many rules, anyways?? When did we get too good for fart jokes??? My plan was to sit down this morning and talk about something probably pretty boring in my kids’ eyes, but this Fart Storm continues to brew and I just can’t get myself to write anything adult- like. So we’re not. Instead, I proclaim today National “Financial Joke Day!” Where we take the day off from being so serious about our money and careers, and instead share the gift of laughter. Not only will they love you for breaking up their boring day too (lucky them!), but perhaps it’ll also spark some good money chats? I want a full report by the end of the day please : )******For the lawyers in your life: On his deathbed, a wealthy man gathered his priest, his accountant, and his lawyer together. He had spent his life amassing a fortune and he couldn’t stand the thought of being parted with it. He made each of them swear to withdraw 1/3 of his money and sneak it into his coffin at his funeral so that he would be buried with it. He died soon after. Following the funeral the three men were walking back to their vehicles and begin talking to each other about the deceased man’s odd request. The priest said “Forgive me, for I have sinned. I withheld 1. 0% of my portion of his fortune from his coffin so that I could help the poor.”The accountant said “I too have not followed his instructions exactly. I withheld 2. 0% of my portion of his fortune as compensation for my services.”The lawyer said “Shame on you both! I followed his instructions perfectly: I left a check for my full portion in his coffin.”For your landlord friends: A devastated- looking man knocks on the door of a woman known for her charity.“Please, ma’am,” he says when she opens up, “can you help this poor, tragic family down the block? The father just lost his job, and his wife is too ill to work. They’re about to be turned out into the cold streets unless someone can pay their rent.”“That’s the worst thing I’ve ever heard in my life!” says the woman. May I ask who you are?”“I’m their landlord.”For all the stock brokers out there: A stock broker was opening the door of his BMW when a car came along and hit the door, ripping it off completely. When the police arrived on scene, the broker complained bitterly about the damage to his car.“Officer, look what they’ve done to my Bimmer!”“You stock brokers are so materialistic, it’s ridiculous” retorted the officer. You’re so worried about your stupid BMW, you didn’t even notice that your left arm was ripped off.”“Oh, my!” screamed the broker, noticing the bloody stump where his arm used to be. My Rolex!”For the politicos! Late one night a mugger wearing a ski mask jumped into the path of a well- dressed man and stuck a gun in his ribs.“Give me your money,” he demanded. Indignant, the affluent man replied, “You can’t do this – I’m a US Congressman!”“In that case,” replied the robber, “Give me MY money!”For everyone who thinks mighty high of themselves: A guy was taking a smoke break with one of his non- smoking colleagues.“How long have you been smoking for?” the colleague asks.“Thirty years,” says the smoker.“Thirty years!” marvels the co- worker. That costs so much money. At a pack a day, you’re spending $1,9. Had you instead invested that money at an 8% return for the last 3. That’s enough to buy a Ferrari!”The smoker looked puzzled.“Do you smoke?” he asked his co- worker.“No.”“So where is your Ferrari?”For the teachers out there: A kindergarten teacher spent a few minutes each morning teaching a new word to her class. One day, the teacher said that the word for the day was “frugal.” She explained that frugal had to do with saving, and a frugal person is one who saves. She then asked the class to come up with a sentence for the word. The class seemed kind of stumped, and sat there in silence for a few seconds until one little girl raised her hand. Instead of just a sentence, she came up with a little story: “There once was a princess who was stuck in a tall tower. There was a spell on all of the doors, so she couldn’t get out. One day, she heard a young prince who was walking by and singing. The princess called out of the tower, ‘Frugal me! Frugal me!’ So, the prince frugaled her and they lived happily ever after.”For your children: Where does a fish keep his money? In a River- bank! TLC, located in Rockville, MD, is a private, nonprofit organization that offers specialized programs for individuals with disabilities & developmental delays. DEPRESSION, SUICIDE RISK AND AUTISM. People with Autism Spectrum Disorders such as autism and Asperger's syndrome can be prone. Asperger Syndrome (AS) is a neurobiological disorder on the higher-functioning end of the autism spectrum. An individual’s symptoms can range from mild to severe. Asperger’s Syndrome Symptoms in Adults – Overcoming the Top 4 Challenges Asperger’s Adults Face. Asperger's syndrome symptoms in adults is a topic less often discussed than Asperger's in children — but it is an important topic because kids with Asperger's syndrome grow up and become adults with Asperger's. Asperger's syndrome is a form of high functioning autism. Irrespective of whether or not an adult has been officially diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome, many adults know they have it…either from the symptoms they exhibit or from informal tests that they may have seen on a web site or in a book. Many adults did not have the opportunity to be tested for Asperger's as a child and were never formally diagnosed. Therefore, they did not benefit from early Asperger's treatment or intervention. In many ways, this makes it especially difficult for many adults with Asperger's. There are many unique challenges to being an adult with Asperger's, from social issues to employment to feelings of self- worth. What does it really feel like to be an adult with Asperger's disorder? The Top 4 Challenges Asperger's Adults Face. A survey of adults with Asperger's revealed that the following issues loomed largest in the adult with Asperger's syndrome. Employment Issues And Asperger's. Employment is a big issue with adults who have Asperger's. In order to be independent in our society, one usually needs a job. A lot of adults with Asperger's want to be independent and live on their own, but to do so they need to be able to pay the bills. And that means getting a job. Adults with Asperger's are usually very intelligent and capable people, but they need a compatible environment for them to be able to thrive. Asperger syndrome, now called high-functioning autism, may not be diagnosed until adulthood. Could you or an adult you know have Asperger syndrome? What they need is usually not compatible with what most work places require. They need control of their environment; co- workers talking, snapping gum, or playing the radio can drive them to distraction. The lights may be too dim or too bright; perfumes or other smells may be bothersome; and in general, there may be too much sensory stimuli in a typical workplace environment to screen out. Then there is office politics, which is something most adults with Asperger's have problems with, and getting along with others in general. Jobs that require working with the public have their own problems. Dysthymia, now known as persistent depressive disorder (PDD), is a mood disorder consisting of the same cognitive and physical problems as depression, with less. And even getting past the interview to get the job can be a problem. This is all very frustrating to the adult with Asperger's who just wants to prove that he can make it on his own and feel like he is contributing something to society. Asperger's Syndrome Leads To Feelings Of Inadequacy And Social Anxiety. Often times, adults with Asperger's syndrome have to work twice as hard just to keep up with their typical peers, and often still fall behind. They see their peers getting jobs, living alone, getting married, and having an active social life, and they often feel jealous and a bit bitter if they are having problems in any of those areas. This is not to say that all adults with Asperger's will have these issues, but often issues will crop up in one area or another. There is pressure to compare themselves to others their age, and they always find themselves wanting. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy, anxiety and depression. They may have a job, but still be living with their parents; or perhaps they have a job and live alone, but still rely on their family for a lot of help with everyday tasks. Keeping an apartment up, cleaning, cooking, and bill paying can all pose challenges, and trying to be social out in the world takes far more energy for an adult with Asperger's than the typical person. Difficulty With Friends And Relationships. Many adults with Asperger's want to have friends, but their lack of social savvy makes it hard to do. Their difficulties picking up social cues and social anxiety get in the way of having friendships. Romantic relationships are even more difficult. Relationships are hard even for people without Asperger's; there is so much communication and understanding that is required; so much give and take. These are all things that can be hard for someone with Asperger's. They are not impossible, but they can be difficult. Adults with Asperger's are often lonely due to problems in this area. Social groups and activities with other people who also have Asperger's can lessen some of this loneliness. Feelings Of Meaninglessness. A lot of adults with Asperger's are just plain brilliant in some areas. They know everything there is to know about the solar system, electronics or some obscure part of history. They like to think deeply. They have things they would like to do with their lives, goals and dreams. Some of them do accomplish these goals with a lot of work. Others are not so lucky. Sensory issues, a tendency to get easily overwhelmed, or other issues get in the way of them achieving what they would like to. A large number of adults are on disability and cannot work. Finding things to fill their time can be a challenge. Symptoms, Types, Causes & Treatment. Behaviors. Persons with autism often exhibit a variety of abnormal behaviors. There may be repetitive actions, a hypersensitivity to sensory input through vision, hearing, or touch (tactile). As a result, there may be an extreme intolerance to loud noises or crowds, visual stimulation, or things that are felt. Birthday parties and other celebrations can be disastrous for some of these individuals. Wearing socks or tags on clothing may be perceived as painful. Sticky fingers, playing with modeling clay, eating birthday cake or other foods, or walking barefoot across the grass can be unbearable. On the other hand, there may be an underdeveloped (hyposensitivity) response to the same type of stimulation. This individual may use abnormal means to experience visual, auditory, or tactile (touch) input. This person may head bang, scratch until blood is drawn, scream instead of speaking in a normal tone, or bring everything into close visual range. He or she might also touch an object, image, or other people thoroughly just to experience the sensory input. Children and adults who have autism are often tied to routine and many everyday tasks may be ritualistic. Something as simple as a bath might only be accomplished after the precise amount of water is in the tub, the temperature is exact, the same soap is in its assigned spot, and even the same towel is in the same place. Any break in the routine can provoke a severe reaction in the individual and place a tremendous strain on the adult trying to work with him or her. There may also be nonpurposeful repetition of actions or behaviors. Persistent rocking, teeth grinding, hair or finger twirling, hand flapping, and walking on tiptoe are not uncommon. Frequently, there is a preoccupation with a very limited interest or a specific plaything. A child or adult may continually play with only one type of toy. The child may line up all the dolls or cars and the adult line up their clothes or toiletries, for example, and repeatedly and systematically perform the same action on each one. Any attempt to disrupt the person may result in extreme reactions on the part of the individual with autism, including tantrums or direct physical attack. Objects that spin, open and close, or perform some other action can hold an extreme fascination. If left alone, a person with this disorder may sit for hours turning off and on a light switch, twirling a spinning toy, or stacking nesting objects. Some individuals can also have an inappropriate bonding to specific objects and become hysterical without that piece of string, paper clip, or wad of paper. What causes autism? Since autism was first added to the psychiatric literature about 5. Researchers still have not reached agreement regarding its specific causes. First, it must be recognized that autism is a set of a wide variety of symptoms and may have many causes. This concept is not unusual in medicine. For instance, the set of symptoms that we perceive of as a "cold" can be caused by literally hundreds of different viruses, bacteria, and even our own immune system. Autism is thought to be a biologically- based disorder. In the past, some researchers had suggested that autism was the result of poor attachment skills on the part of the mother. This belief has caused a great deal of unnecessary pain and guilt on the part of the parents of children with autism, when in fact, the inability of the individual with autism to interact appropriately is one of the key symptoms of this developmental disorder. Some risk factors for autism include high maternal age at the time of birth of the child, as well as maternal prenatal medication use, bleeding, or gestational diabetes. Other support of a biological theory of autism includes that several known neurological disorders are associated with autistic features. Autism is one of the symptoms of these disorders. These conditions include. X syndrome (inherited disorder). Rett syndrome (a mutation of a single gene); and. Autism, in short, seems to be the end result or "final common pathway" of numerous disorders that affect brain development. Also, brain studies have demonstrated that persons with autism tend to have a number of abnormalities in brain size. In general, however, when clinicians make the diagnosis of autism, they are excluding the known causes of autistic behaviors. However, as the knowledge of conditions that cause autism advances, fewer and fewer cases will likely be thought of as being "pure" autism and more individuals will be identified as having autism due to specific causes. There is a strong association between autism and seizures. This association works in two ways: First, many patients with autism develop seizures. Second, patients with seizures, which are probably due to other causes, may develop autistic- like behaviors. One special and often misunderstood association between autism and seizures is the Landau- Kleffner syndrome. Treatments for Adults With High Functioning Autism. While Asperger syndrome is no longer an official diagnosis, the symptoms of "mild autism" are just as common as ever. Those symptoms include a life- impairing level of difficulty with social communication, some level of sensitivity to sensory input, and a need for sameness, repetition, and order. Some people with milder forms of autism are also likely to be "passionate" about a particular area of interest and have a hard time engaging with other people outside of that special interest. If you're an adult with those symptoms, you may already have an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis. Or, like many people, you may be wondering whether you should consider seeking a diagnosis. If you're on the fence, or not sure whether treatment is likely to be helpful now that you're an adult, it's important to know what's available and what isn't. Do Adults with High Functioning Autism Really Need Treatment? If you're an adult with mild symptoms of autism, you may already have figured out how to navigate the adult world with your challenges. You may have found a romantic partner, a great job, and a terrific living situation. If that's your reality, do you really need any kind of treatment? No. Autism is not a disease, and it is not degenerative. So there is no physical need or ethical obligation to do anything about it if you don't want to or need to. Many people who suspect they have mild autism may never seek a diagnosis. Quite a few who are diagnosed as adults simply stop with the diagnosis and walk away. Treatments and therapies are really only useful if they can improve your ability to navigate your world successfully. They can help you to reduce anxiety, improve functional skills, and manage your emotions appropriately. In addition, seeking help can introduce you to a world of resources and support groups that could be somewhat or even very helpful. For those people who are interested in exploring their AS further, says Dr. Shana Nichols of the Fay J. Lindner Center for Autism in New York, "We do a debriefing and exploration focused what they feel now that they know about it. We do a diagnostic 'life mapping' and explore that; we talk about how all people with AS are different from one another. Then we make a plan from there: We say you came there for a reason,' and we ask, 'Where would you like to go next?'"What Are the Goals of Therapy? When people are diagnosed as adults, says Dr. Nichols: "Some people are overjoyed because finally, everything makes sense to them - - why they can't hold a job, keep a relationship. They have blamed themselves all their lives. Now they have a framework in which to understand their difficulties and their strengths. For a lot of people, it's a relief." For people who were diagnosed as children, of course, there is no "ah ha" moment - - but it may nevertheless be helpful to consider going beyond child- appropriate therapies as an adult. Some of the issues Nichols explores with her patients include quality of life concerns such as leisure interests, social activities, health, employment, and family. We look at all the different areas that make up quality of life, see how they're doing, and where they want to make some changes."In addition to working on personal goals, says Nichols, "Family work is often indicated. There are often rifts that have occurred where siblings are no longer talking. We explore the questions, 'What do you want to tell your family? How would you like to repair relationships?' Sometimes we have families come in to work on issues together."Which Kinds of Treatments Are Available for Adults with High Functioning Autism? Children with any level of autism usually receive a set of treatments and therapies in school. Often, they'll receive physical, occupational and speech therapy along with some kind of social skills training and behavior support. If they over- or under- react to sensory input (lights seem too bright, sounds seem too loud, etc.), their parents might also sign them up for sensory integration therapy. As they get older, they might get involved with social skills groups and cognitive therapy. While some of these therapies are appropriate for adults with AS, says Dr. Nichols, treatment for adults really depends upon the individual adult's response to the diagnosis. And responses can run the gamut from joy to anger and everything in between. Beyond cognitive therapy, adults with a high functioning autism diagnosis have a number of other treatment options. They can ask their diagnostician to write a report that clearly outlines diagnostic issues, IQ, and adaptive behaviors. With that report, adults diagnosed with autism can often qualify for services provided by state and/or federal agencies. Such services range from cognitive therapy to vocational training, job placement, health insurance, and, in some cases, housing. Perhaps most important, say autism advocates, is "do it yourself" therapy. Normal Respiratory Rate in Adults and Children. If you are experiencing respiratory symptoms, you may be wondering, “what is a normal respiratory rate?” Let’s begin by talking about the normal range of respiratory rate for adults and children, how to accurately measure this rate, and what it means if the rate is abnormal. Overview. The respiratory rate is defined as the number of breaths a person takes during a one- minute period of time while at rest. Recent studies suggest that an accurate recording of respiratory rate is very important in predicting serious medical events; studies also suggest that measurements of respiratory rate are not done as often as they should be, so it's been coinedthe“ignored vital sign.”Measuring Respiratory Rate. Respiratory rate is measured by counting the number of breaths a person takes in a one- minute period. Since many factors can affect the results, understanding how to take an accurate measurement is very important. Breathing (or respiration, or ventilation) is the process of moving air into and out of the lungs to facilitate gas exchange with the internal environment, mostly by. Canine Parvovirus or “Parvo” is an extremely contagious viral disease causing severe gastrointestinal distress in young dogs. - Wag! (formerly Vetary). The rate should be measured at rest, not after someone has been up and walking about. Being aware that your breaths are being counted can make the results inaccurate, as people often alter the way they breathe if they know it's being monitored. Nurses are skilled at overcoming this problem by discretely counting respirations, watching the number of times your chest rises and falls—often while pretending to take your pulse. While recording respiratory rate, several other markers of respiratory problems may also be noted. Is your patient or loved one uncomfortable? Do the muscles in her neck tighten as she breathes? Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is sudden and serious lung failure that can occur in people who are critically ill or have major injuries. The field of resuscitation has been evolving for more than two centuries. The Paris Academy of Science recommended mouth-to-mouth ventilation for drowning victims in. Medical professionals call this “the use of accessory muscles” to breathe.) Can you hear any wheezing or other abnormal breathing sounds? What Does It Measure? The number of breaths we take per minute is a sign of how often our brain is telling our bodies to breathe. If the oxygen level in the blood is low, or alternately if the carbon dioxide level in the blood is high, our body is instructed to breathe more often. For example, having a severe infection increases the carbon dioxide produced in the body, so even if there's a normal level of oxygen in the blood, the brain instructs the body to breathe more often to clear the carbon dioxide. But there are times when this system doesn’t work so well, such as when people are treated with narcotic medications. These medications in effect dull the response of the brain to signals from the blood, so someone may breathe less often than needed. This may also occur with head injuries that damage the respiratory center in the brain. Normal Respiratory Rates in Children. Children have faster respiratory rates than adults, and the "normal" respiratory rate can vary significantly by age. The normal ranges of respiratory rates for children of different ages include: Newborn: 3. Infant (1 to 1. 2 months): 3. Toddler (1- 2 years): 2. Preschooler (3- 5 years): 2. School- age child (6- 1. Adolescent (1. 3- 1. Periodic Breathing in Children. What Is a Normal Respiratory Rate? Normal, Increased, and Decreased Respiratory Rates in Adults and Children. Infants usually have a much faster respiratory rate than older children, and can also exhibit a phenomenon referred to as periodic breathing. With periodic breathing a child's average respiratory rate may vary widely; she may have periods during which she breathes slower than normal followed by a few minutes of breathing much faster than normal. The importance of periodic breathing is that—while it can be frightening as a parent—it is usually quite normal unless your child has other symptoms suggestive of an underlying medical condition. Normal Respiratory Rates in Adult. As with children, the respiratory rate should be measured when a person is at rest and has not just engaged in vigorous activity. In general, respiratory rates are slightly faster in women than men. The average respiratory rate in a healthy adult is between 1. Abnormal Respiratory Rates. Both an increased and decreased respiratory rate can be a sign that something is amiss in the body. An abnormal rate is fairly nonspecific, meaning there are many causes of both a rapid and a slow rate. It’s important again to note that the normal ranges are for people at rest. Respiratory rate normally increases during exercise. Increased Respiratory Rate. What is an elevated respiratory rate? In adults, the cut- off is usually considered a rate over 2. As noted above, respiratory rate is a very important vital sign. One study found that an elevated respiratory rate was a better determinant of people who were stable versus unstable than heart rate or blood pressure. There are many causes of an increased rate, some that are related to the lungs and some that are not. Some of the more common causes include: Fever - An increased rate of breathing with a fever as the body attempts to lose heat by breathing faster. This is important in that a rapid respiratory rate can be a sign of a worsening infection, and that a fever needs to be taken into account in interpreting the respiratory rate. Common Causes and Natural Treatments. Uncontrollable shivering is your body’s reaction to being exposed to cold temperatures for a length of time, a drop in blood sugar levels, fighting an infection, sepsis, or being under extreme anxiety. Severe shivering is also called “rigors” and the body uses these tremors to increase its core temperature. Depending on the cause of your shivering, you may or may not have a fever with it. Advertisement. If the shivering is caused by being cold, then warming yourself up will usually stop the shivering quickly. However, if the severe chills are caused by an underlying health condition like diabetes, abnormal thyroid, or anemia, then it’s important to address these medical issues. For some people, uncontrollable shaking happens with a panic attack and in those cases, the shivering should stop when the panic subsides. This article looks at the most common causes of uncontrollable shivering and the reasons why sometimes your body starts shaking involuntarily. You will also find out some of the best natural treatments for shivering uncontrollably and if your condition requires that you see a doctor. Shivering: Common Causes and Natural Treatments. Read on to find out what could be causing your uncontrollable body shakes and what you can do to stop the shivering naturally. Being cold. A very common reason for shivering is being very cold for a long period of time. As your body temperature drops, your brain sends signals to your muscles that cause them to shake and create more heat. While being cold and shivering is something we all feel from time to time, uncontrollable shivering or rigors could be a sign of hypothermia. Doctors from the Mayo Clinic say that shivering is a symptom of hypothermia and may be associated with dizziness, nausea, increased heart rate and breathing, and confusion. As the hypothermia becomes more severe, the shivering will increase. However, as the hypothermia get more serious, the shivering will eventually stop. Hypothermia can also affect older people even if they are exposed to small drops in temperature. The National Institute on Aging recommends that homes where elderly people live should be kept to at least 6. F to 7. 0°F (2. 0°C to 2. C) during wintertime. Putting on warm layers of clothing or blankets, drinking warm beverages, and being near to a source of heat can help to raise your body’s core temperature and stop the uncontrollable shivering. Having the flu or common cold. If you have uncontrollable shivering, it could be a sign that your body is starting to fight an infection like the common cold or the flu virus. The chills are caused by a fever which makes the body feel colder, and the shivering tries to increase the body’s core temperature. Dr. Jennifer Robinson on Web. MD says that one of the first symptoms of the flu are periods of chills and sweats as the fever comes and goes. Along with shivering and a fever, the flu virus usually causes you to have aching muscles, fatigue, and a cough. Depending on the severity of your cold, you may or may not have shivering with it. For many people, the flu usually lasts about a week, but recovery back to full health can take longer. If you have flu- like symptoms with episodes of uncontrollable shivering, it’s essential to get plenty of rest to help your body heal itself. The shivering symptoms should stop as the body gets better and deals with the infection. You can also take garlic to combat the severity of flu symptoms. Garlic contains a compound called allicin which has powerful antibiotic properties and can help the body fight off infections. To use garlic to combat colds and the flu naturally, mince up 1- 2 cloves of garlic and let it stand for 1. This allows the allicin to form. Then mix the garlic with a spoonful of raw, natural honey and consume. Take the garlic remedy daily at the onset of a cold or flu to help reduce the symptoms. When using as a medicine, please remember to avoid these mistakes when using garlic. Infections. There are other infections that can cause uncontrollable shivering. In fact, sudden chills and uncontrollable shaking are often one of the first signs of any kind of viral or bacterial infection in the body. Shivering could be a sign of pneumonia in some people. The rigors will usually be accompanied by a persistent cough, breathlessness, and fatigue. If you have a cough that doesn’t go away and think you may have pneumonia, it’s important to seek professional medical help. Severe shivering could also be a sign of malaria. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, symptoms of malaria can appear up to 1. The initial malaria attack is termed as a “cold stage” which makes the body shiver uncontrollably. This is followed by fever, headaches, vomiting, and sweating. Many infections can be prevented by keeping your immune system strong and healthy. Please read my article on the best advice on using natural remedies to boost your immune system. What Do Wolves Eat - Diet. Wolves are carnivores (meat eaters) but they will. Salamanders are a family of amphibians that look like lizards but are actually completely unrelated to them. They can be distinguished from lizards by their smooth, wet skin and tendency to live in the water. Undernutrition a occurs when people do not eat (or absorb) enough nutrients to cover their needs for energy and growth, or to maintain a healthy immune system.Salamanders are most famous for their ability to regrow limbs that they have lost, including their tails, legs and arms, in just a few days! Thanks to their bright colors and cute appearance, many salamanders are kept as pets, causing many new owners to ask: What do salamanders eat? In order to come up with a suitable diet for your pet, you must first understand what these fascinating creatures eat in their natural environment. What do Salamanders Eat in the Wild? A salamander's diet largely depends on its environment, as some species spend their whole lives underwater while some live on the land. In fact, salamanders are one of the few animal families to have species with and without lungs, or even both. Salamanders that live on land are carnivores with long, sticky tongues like their relatives, frogs. They creep up on prey until they are in striking distance and then lunge forward, shooting their tongue out to catch it. These salamanders eat a wide variety of prey, including spiders, worms, dragonflies, slugs, centipedes, insect eggs, frog eggs and other small invertebrates. Salamanders that live in the water have gills like a fish and are quick, agile swimmers. A few of them have special bones that allow them to shoot out their tongues like cannons, but most aquatic species hunt by out- swimming their targets and catching them in their wide mouths. An aquatic salamander eats small fish, tadpoles, frogs, leeches, mosquito eggs and anything else that has the misfortune to fall into the water. What do Baby Salamanders Eat? Baby salamanders, or nymphs, go through a process of metamorphosis much like frogs. A freshly- hatched nymph is tiny and shaped like a tadpole. Even at a young age, the nymph has a row of sharp little teeth and is never a vegetarian. It eats its own eggshell and lives off of those nutrients for as much as a week while it grows and avoids predators. Once it is big enough to hunt on its own, the nymph begins to catch small aquatic animals like brine shrimp and plankton. As it grows, it moves on to bigger prey such as mosquito eggs, insect larvae and tadpoles. After about two months, the nymph is nearly full- grown and able to eat the same foods as an adult. What do Pet Salamanders Eat? It's all well and good to know the diet of wild salamanders, but what do salamanders eat in captivity? The good news is that salamanders are notoriously easy to feed. They are not very picky, and if an object is moving and small enough to fit into a salamander's mouth, it will be consumed with great relish in less than a second. You do, however, need to keep a salamander's nutritional needs in mind when feeding it. For land- dwelling salamanders, worms and other bugs available at most pet stores are the preferred diet. This includes crickets, earthworms, meal worms, maggots, buffalo worms and mosquito larvae. Aquatic salamanders require slightly different foods, with brine shrimp being the most common item on the menu. Other meals for these salamanders are worms such as earthworms or black worms; small fish like minnows; and larger shrimp such as ghost shrimp or crayfish. When in doubt, stick to prey that can be found in a salamander's natural habitat. Red meats and poultry, for example, should not be fed to a pet salamander as their bodies have a hard time digesting them. Any sort of bug or small invertebrate, however, is typically fair game. Salamanders are great pets for kids and adults alike thanks to their relative ease of care and exotic appearance. Once you have set up a habitat and figured out what salamanders eat, you should be ready for years with your beautiful new companion. Pre- party I attempted to build a bird house for the first time out of popsicle sticks and an hour later still not being finished I realized that this plan had disaster written all over it. Afterall, I had invited 4 and 5 year old children over. Short attention spans coupled with fiddly work was not going to be a good mix for them. So a quick revision of my plan and a quick 3. I came up with instead: So once our plan was in place, Marisol and I hit the ground running for craft supplies and food for our party. THE FOOD: Sticking with the orange, white and blue theme of Elmer's, I had a blast coming up with food for the party: Peach Parfaits: 1 large tub of vanilla yogurt mixed with 1 tub of cool whip, alternate in a cup with peaches and top with granola. Jelly Oranges: Cook jelly according to the package directions. Slice an orange in half and remove inside. Fill with the jelly liquid. Refrigerate until set. Take a sharp knife and slice through the center again. Cupcakes: Mini chocolate cupcakes with orange and blue icing piped on. Blueberry muffins. Sandwiches: Cheese (cut with cookie cutters) for the kids, and roast beef, cheese and mango chutney for the adults. Jars filled with clementines, goldfish, Sun Chips, and blueberries (I put re- useable ice- cubes under the blueberries to keep them cold). Beverages: Orange juice, mango juice and a pitcher of iced water with orange slices, and mimosa's for the mums. THE CRAFT PROJECT: After lunch and playing outside, we settled indoors to do the craft project. Hubby extended our new dining room table and we placed a plastic tablecloth down to protect it, hung the bird feeder that I had made from the light and then lined up lots of little gift boxes for all of the children containing all of the supplies they would need to make their project. The gift boxes contained: 5. Elmer's X- TREME glue. To make the bird feeder: Line up 1. Glue 2 sticks across them. Turn it over. Do a second row of popsicle sticks going in the opposite direction to strengthen the base (I actually did this at the end because it was a last minute decision, but doing it at the beginning will give it more support as you build). Alternate popsicle sticks around the frame once. Glue down to the tongue depresser. Continue alternating popsicle sticks around the outside until you have 6 rows, gluing each popsicle stick down as you go. Set aside to dry. Let the kids paint their bird feeder, and set aside to dry. Parents: using a hot glue gun, attach the hemp cord to the underside of the bird feeder. Thread the cord underneath the top round of popsicle sticks (as shown above) and again, glue using a hot glue gun. All of our little friends took their bird feeders home to paint them and fill with seed. Marisol and Flynn finished theirs after the party but they are yet to be hung outside. First I need to track down that outdoor varnish. Let the unpacking of more boxes proceed ... |
